Seeing with Prize Eyes

Pastor Clay NeSmith | Jun. 9, 2024

Notes

For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.

Titus 2:11-14

The grace of God, the unmerited favor of our Creator, has been revealed. We trust His grace as we look forward to what He is going to do. We can operate in this world and overcome challenges when we live by faith in God’s grace and what His plan for the world is.

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:1-3

Trouble will come into your life in all forms and fashions. But you can operate in God’s amazing grace and get through those challenges by looking forward to the return of Jesus. So, how do we operate with prize eyes?

1) Have the End in Mind

Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies. Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She finds wool and flax and busily spins it. She is like a merchant’s ship, bringing her food from afar. She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household and plan the day’s work for her servant girls... She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.

Proverbs 31:10-15, 25

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.

Revelation 21:1-7

Prize eyes have the end in mind. The description of the woman in Proverbs 31 is a representation of us working together today as the local church. She is someone who prepares, who is diligent, and has a focus on moving forward. Having prize eyes means valuing the future over the past. Your hope has to be higher than your pain. God is the alpha and the omega; He is not finished yet.

2) Value Discipline

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.

John 16:13-14

The Proverbs 31 woman valued discipline because she valued the future. Getting stronger physically requires the discipline to exercise, and getting stronger spiritually also requires discipline. Without a picture of the future God has in store for us, we won’t push ourselves daily to be disciplined in our faith. That is why we’re given the Holy Spirit; He might not always make you feel good, but He is there to minister to us, help us stay disciplined, and keep us focused.

3) Focus on the Prize in Spite of the Obstacles

I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us... For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth. But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.

Philippians 3:14, 18-21

Whether an obstacle is in the past or in front of you right now, don’t become obsessed with it. Be fixated on the victory that God can have in your life. We have the choice to pout about today, or refocus on what is still yet to come. God’s grace has been revealed; is your faith in that grace and are you operating with prize eyes?
