Trouble is Certain, But So is Triumph
[Things Jesus Never Said - Week I]

Notes

"I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world." Faith in God doesn't make trouble disappear, but it gives us the strength to endure when trouble comes. The peace Jesus offers isn't the absence of pain, tears, or sorrow--but it's a peace rooted in relationship, not circumstances.

John 16:33

1) The peace Jesus offers isn't circumstantial, but relational.

Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.

Romans 8:1-2

God's peace exceeds anything we can understand. It guards our hearts and minds when we stay connected to Christ, even when life is hard. Because of Jesus, there is no condemnation for those who belong to Him. We are freed from the power of sin and death by His Spirit. But God's blessings aren't just for our comfort--they are to set us apart for His purpose.

In our broken world, sickness, death, and hardship are inevitable. Yet Jesus, our King, offers a peace that surpasses our circumstances--a peace anchored in His victory over sin and death.

2) Trouble is certain, but so is triumph.

Can anything ever separate us from Christ's love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, "For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep. ") No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow--not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love.

Romans 8:35-38

If we are living in unrepentant sin, the biblical word for what we should do is "stop." The Holy Spirit is given to help us navigate trials, giving us peace that defies our situations.

The story of Joseph reminds us that even when harm is intended against us, God can turn it for good:

"You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people."

Genesis 50:20

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Romans 8:28

Hardships don't mean God is absent. Instead, they are often the very ground where His greatest work grows. God can work good out of bad. When Jesus calls us out of darkness, into His light, and puts His Spirit in us, it is because He has a purpose for us.

3) Jesus overcame, and ultimately we will too.

And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don't need to hope for it. But if we look forward to something we don't yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.

Romans 8:23-26

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, "Look, God's home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever."
And the one sitting on the throne said, "Look, I am making everything new!" And then he said to me, "Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true." And he also said, "It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega--the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.
"But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars--their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

Revelation 21:1-8

The Holy Spirit walks with us through life, and will help us in our weakness. He helps us walk in confident hope as we long for the great future God has planned. One day, God will wipe every tear, and death, sorrow, and pain will be no more. For those who endure with Christ, victory is certain.

The hardship won't last forever, but God's peace will. We don't ignore the reality of pain, but we live with hope anchored in Jesus--the One who is making everything new.
